If you’ve talked to anyone who has gone to Amsterdam, you’ve probably gathered a few assumptions about this Netherlands hotspot. And they’re probably all pretty true.
A few days in Amsterdam was packed with gorgeous canal views, tasty crepes, a crazy trip down to the Red Light District, a few history lessons, and of course, Heineken.
Check out my recs for things to do a places to see when visiting Amsterdam:
Heineken Brewery Tour
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without seeing where Heineken is made. This tour can either be taken with a guide or self-guided (which we opted to do) and has the option of a canal boat tour as well. We loved learning about the history of Heineken and even seeing the Heineken horses — before indulging in some super fresh beer ourselves and making our own personalized labels.
Red Light District
I mean, if you’re going to Amsterdam, you HAVE to see what all the fuss is about! I would consider the Red Light District akin to Bourbon Street in the best way possible. Lively, loud, and exciting, there is something for almost anyone here. Stop and have a beer, see a Peep Show, or hit up the Moulin Rouge — it’s all here and absolutely worth a visit.
The A’DAM Lookout boasts some of the coolest 360º views of Amsterdam. Take the elevator to the top of the tower and treat yourself to not only the views, but also the history of the city and interactive activities like the sky deck swing over the edge. You’ll love seeing Amsterdam from a totally new angle and get some great photos to boot.
This beautiful park is Amsterdam’s most famous, and is a perfect place to sit and relax after walking all over the city, people watch, and picnic. You’ll find Vondelpark to be a place where locals and tourists alike come to wind down while being part of of one of the oldest parks in the Netherlands.
Anne Frank House
This sobering tour of Anne Frank’s house is well worth the time. You’ll tour Anne’s home and have the opportunity to self-guide yourself through her life history and leave with much more than you could expect. This thought-provoking tour books up super quick and you will want to book tickets in advance.
Wynand Fockink Proeflokaal and Spirits Tasting
Looking for liqueurs? You’ve got all that and more at Wynand Fockink Distillery, which comes with a robust tasting and in-depth tour. What makes Wynand Fockink so cool? It’s been around since the 17th century and produces more than 70 Dutch liqueurs in the same practice now as they did then!
I Amsterdam sign
Let’s be honest, this is probably the most touristy thing you can see in Amsterdam, but it’s fun. Grab a pic for the ‘gram and enjoy!
What we ate
Crepes, crepes, and more crepes! It doesn’t matter where you go, crepes will be on the menu, and they will be delicious. They are also massive, so definitely think about splitting them!
